Clayton “Bud” Calkins Memorial Show History

Clayton, the son of Tom and Sandy Calkins of Lakin, passed away unexpectedly in August of 2011 at the age of 25.  Raising and showing livestock was his passion.  It was his dream to one day host his own livestock show.  Clayton’s family and friends keep this dream alive through the Clayton “Bud” Calkins Memorial Livestock Classic annually in April in Lakin, Kansas.  The goal is to not only host a top-notch swine show along with a KCCA sanctioned beef show, but to use any money earned to provide scholarships for participants.

We had some amazing numbers for the first 2 shows and hope to improve on them this year.  In 2012 and 2013 we had a total of 234 exhibitors showing a total of 378 animals.  In the last 2 years we have been able to give out over $13,500.00 in prize money to these exhibitors for their hard work and dedication to their 4-H and FFA projects.  We gave out $3000 in scholarship money and sponsored the 3rd place overall hog at the Kansas State Fair.
